Distribution: It is widely distributed in a wide range of elevations (300-5250ft) of hills of most of Peninsular India, from south Gujarat to West Bengal and all southward regions. In the Western Ghats also it is widely distributed from Dangs (Gujarat) to the southern Western Ghats up to the Shencottah gap of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Probably it is completely replaced by Western Bamboo Pit Viper in the central Western Ghats.

Scalation:
10-12 supralabials, first completely separated from nasal, 2 rows of scales between supralabials and elongated subocular, upper head scales smooth and small. Dorsal scales weakly keeled, in 19/21 mid-body rows. Ventrals 158-179.
Morphology:
It is a medium-sized snake that can grow up to 114cm. but usually, it is found in 60-70cm range. Its body is covered with moderately keeled scales and ends in a medium length tail. Its upper body colour is green or yellowish-green, with irregular black markings which are usually indistinct in adults and more prominent in juveniles. Its underside is enamel yellow. Its head is large and distinctly broader than its neck. Heat sensing pits are found between the eyes and nostrils. Its eyes are moderate and bear vertical pupils.
