The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials have arrested a 60-year-old man at Kempegowda International Airport for attempting to smuggle gold from Dubai to Bengaluru. The passenger, identified as Veerappa Shanmuga Reddy, was intercepted by the DRI Bengaluru unit on June 25 following a precise intelligence tip-off.
During a thorough search, officials discovered approximately 2 kg of 24-karat gold hidden inside specially designed undergarments. The gold had been cleverly converted into paste form to evade detection.
Following the arrest, DRI officials conducted extensive raids at the suspect's residences in both Bengaluru and Chennai. These searches yielded additional quantities of gold and silver, alongside significant amounts of Indian and foreign currency.
According to official sources, authorities suspect the involvement of a major smuggling syndicate behind this operation. Investigators are currently grilling the accused to uncover his potential links to a wider international smuggling network.
