The Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) has provided major relief to tenants availing themselves of benefits under the state government's ambitious free electricity initiative, the 'Gruha Jyothi' scheme. BESCOM has clarified that the ongoing Aadhaar verification campaign for beneficiaries will not disrupt or halt the free electricity benefits currently enjoyed by consumers.
The special verification drive commenced on July 1 to update the Aadhaar details of genuine beneficiaries currently residing in rented properties. However, this sparked anxiety among many tenants who feared that updating details could lead to the cancellation of their free electricity benefits, especially in houses where the Aadhaar cards of previous tenants were still linked. Addressing these concerns, BESCOM clarified that its field staff will update the records strictly based on the details of the residents currently living in the house. The utility company assured that this process will not cause any hindrance or lead to the suspension of the scheme. Officials have promised that the free electricity benefit will continue seamlessly both during and after the verification period.
No Need to Visit Offices as Staff Will Conduct Doorstep Verification
Gruha Jyothi beneficiaries do not need to visit BESCOM offices or undergo any tedious procedures for this verification. BESCOM meter readers and field staff are directly visiting houses to conduct the survey. During these visits, they will verify and update records based on necessary documents, including rental or lease agreement details.
Beneficiaries are requested to keep their rent agreements and required identification cards ready and extend full cooperation to the survey teams. BESCOM has also appealed to house owners to assist their tenants in completing this process smoothly.
