The verification process for beneficiaries of the state government’s flagship Gruha Jyothi scheme commenced on July 1, and ESCOM personnel are visiting households to collect data. Power distribution company BESCOM has assured the public that tenants need not panic about the drive, clarifying the necessary steps and addressing ongoing concerns.
The re-verification process for the Gruha Jyothi scheme, which was originally launched in July 2023, is currently underway. Addressing confusion particularly among tenants, BESCOM stated that meter readers and ESCOM staff will conduct doorstep visits to check documents, collect information, and complete the application forms through a declaration process. Consumers are requested to keep their documents ready for verification during these visits.
Tenants Need Not Panic
To resolve fears that the free electricity benefit might be discontinued, BESCOM clarified that during the doorstep survey, meter readers will remove the Aadhaar details of previous tenants and update the system with the information of current occupants. This clarification comes after several current tenants expressed anxiety that the registered data of previous residents might lead to their disqualification from the scheme.
Documents Required for Verification
Beneficiaries are requested to show their Aadhaar card, a passport-size photograph, voter ID, PAN card, ration card, and rental agreements where applicable. The energy department has emphasized that on-spot verification by meter readers is the only method being used for this process, urging consumers to cooperate fully to ensure smooth completion. This verification drive is being executed across all five electricity supply companies in the state: BESCOM, HESCOM, MESCOM, GESCOM, and CESC.
Category Information is Optional
Responding to reports and discussions on social media regarding the collection of caste details, BESCOM clarified that providing category or caste certificate information is purely optional. If a beneficiary does not wish to share their caste information, field staff have been instructed to select the 'Refuse to disclose information' option within the mobile application.
