In a major move to bolster user privacy, Meta-owned messaging giant WhatsApp is gearing up to introduce a significant update that will transform how users connect. The platform is currently testing a username feature that will allow people to chat with others without ever having to share their personal phone numbers.
Currently, exchanging phone numbers is mandatory to initiate a chat or join a group on WhatsApp. Once this new feature rolls out, WhatsApp will function similarly to Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), or Telegram, where every user can create a unique username. This means even if someone does not have your contact number, they can reach out to you simply by searching for your unique username.
Much like Instagram and Telegram, users will have the freedom to set and reserve their preferred usernames. These unique handles will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, allowing you to choose a name that best suits your profile. The primary advantage of this setup is that it keeps your phone number completely hidden from strangers, ensuring an extra layer of privacy.
To take security a step further, WhatsApp is also introducing a "Username PIN" feature. Under this system, if someone tries to message you for the very first time using your username, they will be required to enter a 4-digit secret PIN set by you. This additional layer of verification is designed to put a strict check on unwanted spam messages.
This update will be highly beneficial for individuals who feel hesitant about sharing their contact numbers in professional groups or with unknown people, significantly enhancing safety and privacy, especially for women. Even if someone manages to find your username, your phone number will remain strictly hidden unless you choose to share it.
The feature is currently in its final testing phase across select Android and iOS beta versions. It is expected to roll out globally as an official update for all users very soon.
