Karwar: A horrific road accident took place on the Karwar-Ankola highway near Mudaga Junction on Monday afternoon when a passenger tempo traveller violently rear-ended a tipper lorry, leaving 12 people injured, including one woman in critical condition.
The ill-fated tempo was travelling from Ankola towards Karwar. According to Karwar Rural Police, the tipper lorry slowed down to negotiate a speed hump near Mudaga. The tempo driver applied emergency brakes, but the braking system reportedly failed, causing the vehicle to lose control and slam into the rear of the lorry at high speed.
The front portion of the tempo traveller was completely crushed in the impact, trapping several passengers inside. Locals and passers-by rushed to the spot and helped rescue the injured before fire and emergency services arrived.
Victim Details Among the 12 injured passengers, a woman named Reshma has sustained serious injuries and is battling for her life at Karwar District Hospital. The remaining 11 passengers are undergoing treatment for fractures, head injuries, and other trauma. Doctors have described their condition as stable but under close observation.
All injured persons were immediately shifted to Karwar District Hospital for advanced medical care.
Police Action Karwar Rural Police Station has registered a case under relevant sections of the IPC and Motor Vehicles Act. Preliminary investigation points to possible brake failure in the tempo traveller. Further probe regarding over-speeding, vehicle fitness, and road safety violations is underway.
This is the latest in a series of accidents reported on the Karwar-Ankola stretch, raising fresh concerns about speed humps, vehicle maintenance, and road safety enforcement in Uttara Kannada district.
