A tragic incident was reported from Karwar taluk on Thursday evening, where a 14-year-old boy drowned in the sea near the Navkanele Nirashritara Colony in Mudga village.
The deceased has been identified as Sonal Araghekar (14), a Class 8 student.
According to sources, the boy had gone to the seashore with his friends to play, as schools were closed on account of the Sankranti festival. While at the beach, Sonal ventured into the water to swim but was caught in strong waves. Despite efforts to rescue him, he was swept away and drowned.
Police personnel from the Karwar Rural Police Station rushed to the spot and conducted an inspection. A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway.
The incident has cast a pall of gloom over the local community.
