Karwar: In a fresh development in the tragic suicide case of 20-year-old Rishel Kistod from Kadra village in Karwar taluk, relatives of Chirag Kotharkar, the young man allegedly linked to the incident, held a press conference today to vehemently condemn what they described as the political exploitation and malicious misuse of the case for personal vendettas.

Emphasizing Chirag's innocence, they urged authorities to conduct a thorough and unbiased investigation, while highlighting potential harassment from Rishel's family as a possible trigger for her death. The case stems from Rishel's suicide on 9th January 2026 which has sparked intense local debate and allegations. On Wednesday Rishel's family and Christian community leraders of Uttara Kannada had publicly accused Chirag of abetting her suicide through alleged harassment, emotional manipulation, and pressure stemming from their inter-community relationship—Rishel being from a Christian family and Chirag from a Hindu background.
They claimed Chirag's persistent advances, including unwanted communications and threats, pushed her to the brink, and demanded strict action against him under abetment laws. The family also pointed to purported evidence from Rishel's phone records and messages, alleging a pattern of coercive behavior that exacerbated her mental distress. This narrative had fueled calls for justice from community leaders and local politicians, who framed the incident as a matter of protecting vulnerable women from interfaith entanglements.
However, Chirag's relatives on Thursday in a hurriedly convened press meet presented a starkly contrasting version, shifting the focus to what they portray as a genuine, mutual romance gone awry due to external pressures. "We are deeply saddened and pained by Rishel's death," a family spokesperson stated during the press meet. "But there is absolutely no connection between her passing and Chirag. A comprehensive examination of her mobile phone will clearly reveal who is truly responsible for this tragedy."
They affirmed that Chirag and Rishel shared a "pure and sacred love," with no immoral or unethical elements involved. Both being just 20 years old, the relationship was described as innocent youthful affection. The relatives expressed strong suspicion that relentless harassment and opposition from Rishel's mother and family members—stemming from their disapproval of the inter-community romance—may have driven her to take the extreme step. "This intolerance to their love could be the real cause," they alleged, calling for an impartial probe to uncover the truth without preconceived biases.
The press conference also addressed the broader fallout, accusing "evil forces" of exploiting Rishel's death for ulterior motives. Chirag, they revealed, is currently undergoing medical treatment for severe mental and physical breakdown amid the mounting accusations. "Irresponsible individuals and sections of the media are spreading baseless claims that could have grave consequences on his well-being," the relatives warned. They assured that evidence proving Chirag's innocence is in their possession and will be submitted to the police at the appropriate time.
Further escalating their stance, the family announced plans to pursue legal action against those disseminating false propaganda, including the misuse of Chirag's mother's photograph in smear campaigns. "In this sensitive phase where police are investigating, the media and public should refrain from premature judgments and allow the legal process to unfold justly," they appealed. Local police have confirmed that an investigation is underway, including forensic analysis of Rishel's phone and statements from both families. No arrests have been made yet, but sources indicate that the case has drawn attention from political circles, with some leaders allegedly using it to stoke communal tensions ahead of local elections.
This evolving story underscores the complexities of young love intersecting with familial, communal, and political pressures in Karnataka. As both sides present conflicting accounts, the call for a fair inquiry remains central, with the truth likely hinging on digital evidence and witness testimonies. Authorities have urged calm and discouraged speculative narratives that could inflame sensitivities in the region.
