Panaji (Goa): A devastating gas cylinder explosion ripped through a well-known nightclub in Arpora, North Goa, late Saturday night, triggering a massive fire that reduced the entire establishment to ashes and claimed the lives of at least 23 people in one of the state’s worst nightlife tragedies in recent years.
The blast occurred shortly after midnight at the popular restaurant-cum-nightclub, located in the bustling tourist belt of Arpora. According to eyewitnesses and officials, the explosion originated in the kitchen area and was followed within seconds by an intense fire that spread rapidly through the premises, trapping dozens inside.
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who rushed to the site in the early hours of Sunday, confirmed the death toll at 23, though police later recovered 25 bodies from the charred remains. Most of the victims were kitchen staff who were working at the time of the incident. Among the dead were three women and three to four tourists, the Chief Minister said.

Medical reports indicate that only three victims died directly from burn injuries, while the majority succumbed to asphyxiation caused by thick, toxic smoke that filled the enclosed space almost instantly.
Preliminary investigations point to serious lapses in fire safety compliance at the venue. “The nightclub was not following fire safety norms. This has come to light in the initial probe,” CM Sawant told reporters at the scene. He announced strict action against the club management for violations and against the officials who granted operating permissions, stating, “Those responsible will not be spared.”
Local MLA Michael Lobo, whose constituency includes Arpora, declared that a statewide audit of fire safety licenses for all clubs and entertainment venues will be conducted immediately. “Any club operating without a valid fire NOC (No Objection Certificate) will be sealed without notice,” Lobo said.
Goa Director General of Police Alok Kumar revealed that the first emergency call was received at 12:04 a.m. Within minutes, multiple fire tenders, police teams, and ambulances were dispatched. Firefighters battled the blaze through the night before bringing it under control by Sunday morning.
Survivors described chaotic scenes as panicked partygoers and staff scrambled for exits, only to find routes blocked by flames and heavy smoke. Several people were reportedly trapped in restrooms and store rooms while trying to escape.
The tragedy has sent shockwaves across Goa, a state heavily dependent on tourism and famous for its vibrant nightlife. Condolences have poured in from across the country, with the state government promising financial assistance and support to the bereaved families.
A detailed investigation into the exact cause of the cylinder explosion and broader safety violations is underway, with forensic teams combing through the debris.
Authorities have urged nightclub and restaurant owners statewide to immediately review and upgrade fire safety measures as the tourism high season approaches.

Mr Modi also hoped that those injured would recover at the earliest. Prime Minister also spoke to Goa Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant about the situation and said, the State Government is providing all possible assistance to those affected.
The Prime Minister has announced that an ex-gratia of 2 lakh rupees will be given to the next of kin of the deceased from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund. The Prime Minister added that the injured would be given 50 thousand rupees.
