Karwar, October 16, 2025: A 24-year-old fisherman, Akshay Anil Majalikar, tragically passed away after being seriously injured by a fish sting while fishing in the Majali Dandebhag area of Karwar taluk, Uttara Kannada district.
On Tuesday, October 14, Akshay had gone fishing on a boat when a sharp-nosed fish, identified as a "Kande" (sucker fish) measuring 8-10 inches, leapt from the water and pierced his abdomen. The severe injury caused by the fish’s sharp snout led to significant internal damage, including to his intestines, according to family allegations.
Akshay was immediately rushed to Karwar’s KRIMS Hospital, where he received treatment for two days. Doctors stitched his wounds and discharged him, but due to persistent pain, he remained at the hospital. Despite medical efforts, Akshay succumbed to his injuries at around 5 AM today

The fisherman’s family has expressed outrage, alleging negligence by the hospital staff as the cause of his death. Relatives have gathered at the hospital premises, demanding answers. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, highlighting the dangers faced by fishermen in the region.
