Open Gambling Rackets Flourish in Ankola, Videos Go Viral on Social Media

By The News Observer Desk,
Ankola: Scenes of open gambling being carried out fearlessly in public places every night in Ankola town of Uttara Kannada district have gone viral on social media, triggering widespread concern among residents.

According to locals, gambling dens linked to the popular ‘kutukuti’ game are operating openly on main roads and in crowded areas of the town. The brazenness of these operations has raised eyebrows, as those involved appear to function without any fear of law enforcement, it is alleged.

Residents allege that gambling sessions are being conducted right in the middle of busy streets. Even more alarming is the claim that during religious, cultural, or public events in both town and nearby rural areas, more than ten gambling tables often spring up alongside these gatherings.

Many youths are allgedly losing thousands of rupees by betting on number-based gambling formats such as Fix, Ela, and Surya-Chandra. Concerned citizens say this is pushing young people into financial distress and unhealthy habits.
Alongside gambling, there are also allegations that other illegal activities, including Osi Matka, are thriving in the town. What has further fueled public anger is the allegation that several of these gambling dens are operating within a radius of just 150 to 200 metres from the Ankola police station.

Despite the proximity, locals allege that the police have turned a blind eye to the issue. The continued silence of law enforcement has led to growing suspicion and criticism in public circles.
After District Superintendent of Police Deepan M. N took charge, gambling activities were reportedly brought under control in many parts of the district. However, residents point out that Ankola appears to be an exception, with gambling rackets resurfacing openly.

This has led to serious allegations that local police personnel may be indirectly supporting gambling operators by not bringing the issue to the attention of higher authorities. The confidence with which gamblers operate—reportedly boasting that “nothing will happen to us no matter what we do”—is being seen as a direct challenge to the rule of law.
In this backdrop, members of the public have urged District Superintendent of Police Deepan to intervene immediately, conduct raids on gambling dens, and take strict action against those involved to restore public confidence in law enforcement.
