Karwar: The coastal town of Karwar rolled out the red carpet on Monday for a group of cycling heroes. The 'Vande Mataram Coastal Cyclothon-2026,' organized by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), received a warm and vibrant welcome as it entered Uttar Kannada district.
The cyclothon, which flags off the 150th anniversary celebrations of the writing of "Vande Mataram," is more than just a long-distance ride. A team of 120 CISF personnel, including 50 women, is pedaling with a purpose. Starting from the historic Lakhpat Fort in Gujarat on January 28, the team is tracing the coastline, arriving in Karwar via Madgaon, Kanakon, and Majali.
The moment they crossed into Karwar, it was clear this was no ordinary arrival. They were greeted at the border by a host of CISF and police officers, an NCC contingent, a spirited police band, and a colorful local folk troupe. The atmosphere was electric with patriotism. At Gotebhag Cross, the welcome reached a heartfelt peak when local fishermen applied tilak to the cyclists' foreheads and showered them with flower petals, symbolizing the strong bond between the forces and the coastal community.
The core message of the event—unity and coastal security—resonated deeply with the onlookers.
Speaking to the crowd, a CISF constable participating in the rally explained the mission behind the marathon. "Our journey started in Gujarat and will conclude in Kochi, Kerala. The driving theme is 'Safe Coastline - Prosperous India.' The idea is simple but powerful: if our coastline is secure, our nation thrives."
He highlighted the unique role of the local fishing community. "Our fishermen are out on the waters day and night. They have an invaluable understanding of the sea and its surroundings. This cyclothon is a bridge to connect with them, to build trust, and to strengthen our collective efforts for national security," he said, also emphasizing the CISF's vital role in protecting the country's critical infrastructure.
The event saw the presence of several senior officials, including Ajay Kumar Jha, Senior Commandant of the CISF's Kaiga Unit; R.P. Singh, Senior Commandant from the Bangalore Satellite Center; Deputy Commandant Birendra Kumar; Ravi Naik, Assistant Director of the Youth Empowerment and Sports Department; and DYSP Girish.
