A timely and courageous rescue by lifeguards averted a tragedy at the Murudeshwar beach when a tourist from Belagavi was caught in strong sea currents while swimming and was being swept away by powerful waves.
According to eyewitnesses, the tourist ventured deep into the sea despite rough conditions, a growing concern seen along several beaches of Uttara Kannada where visitors often ignore safety warnings and underestimate the strength of the Arabian Sea. As the waves intensified, the tourist lost control and began drifting dangerously offshore.
Noticing the distress, staff of Ocean Adventure, Murudeshwar, sprang into action without delay. Lifeguards Vighneshwar Harikanth and Rajesh launched a daring rescue operation, riding a water bike straight into the turbulent waters. Battling high waves and strong currents, they reached the stranded tourist and safely brought him back to shore.
Although the tourist was visibly panicked during the rescue, the swift and professional response of the lifeguards ensured that he escaped a life-threatening situation. He was administered first aid on the beach and is reported to be stable and out of danger.
The incident caused momentary panic among other tourists and locals present at the beach, but it also drew widespread appreciation for the bravery, alertness and efficiency of the Ocean Adventure team and the lifeguards, who have saved several lives in similar incidents in the past.
Authorities and beach safety personnel have once again urged tourists to act responsibly. With sea conditions along the Uttara Kannada coast often turning unpredictable, visitors are strongly advised to avoid reckless swimming, remain within designated safe zones, and strictly follow lifeguard instructions to prevent such near-fatal incidents.
This latest rescue stands as a stark reminder that while Uttara Kannada’s beaches attract thousands of tourists, negligence and thrill-seeking can quickly turn a holiday into a disaster—unless vigilant lifeguards stand ready on the frontline.
