Soaring Smiles: Young Hearts Take Flight Over Karwar's Coast

By The News Observer Desk,

Karwar, December 24, 2025 – Amid the vibrant celebrations of the Karavali Utsav, the skies above this picturesque coastal town came alive with joy as children from special needs schools experienced the thrill of their lives: a free helicopter ride offering breathtaking aerial views of the Arabian Sea, the Kali River confluence, and the charming cityscape below.

The five-day helicopter joy ride service, organized by the Uttara Kannada district administration in partnership with a private aviation company, kicked off today in a heartwarming manner. It was inaugurated not by dignitaries, but by deaf and mute children, whose beaming faces as they lifted off captured the true spirit of the event.

At the center of this touching initiative is Sachi Sail, daughter of local MLA Satish Sail. Bearing the full cost herself, Sachi sponsored free rides for over 20 specially-abled children, as well as students from government schools in the Karwar-Ankola constituency and even civic workers. The gesture marks a personal tradition – every year on her father's birthday, Sachi organizes special gifts for children with disabilities.

"Every year on my father's birthday, we give something special to these children," Sachi shared. "This time, we decided to gift them the unforgettable experience of a helicopter ride. Seeing the smiles on their faces brings us immense happiness. We're also extending free rides to government school kids from underprivileged families."

For many of these young passengers, it was a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Soaring high for about seven minutes, they gazed in wonder at the turquoise waves crashing along the shoreline, the serene meeting point of the Kali River and the sea, and the sprawling beauty of Karwar from above.

Adding to the day's highlights, District Collector Lakshmipriya joined civic workers on a ride, drawing cheers and applause for her inclusive spirit.

Open to the public at ₹3,900 per person, the helicopter rides are part of broader efforts to make the Karavali Utsav accessible and memorable for all. Inspired by inclusive initiatives like the government's free bus scheme, organizers aimed to provide unique experiences to children from every walk of life.

As the festival continues, this sky-high act of kindness has touched hearts across the community, reminding everyone that true celebration lies in lifting others up – quite literally.
