Karwar, January 3, 2026 — Amid the vast expanse of the azure Arabian Sea, where the horizon blends seamlessly with endless blue waters, the tortoise-shaped Kurmagad Island — a historic gem just 4 km off the Karwar coast — played host to a breathtaking display of faith during the annual Jatra festival dedicated to Lord Narasimha Swamy.
Devotees, undeterred by the scorching sun, climbed the rugged hill in long, serpentine queues to seek the divine darshan of their revered deity. The scene was one of profound devotion: a sea of believers transforming the isolated island into a vibrant pilgrimage hub, their chants and prayers echoing across the waves.

As in previous years, this year's celebrations were marked by grandeur and spiritual fervor. The sacred idol of Lord Narasimha was ceremoniously ferried by boat from Kadwad village in Karwar to the island's ancient temple, amid thunderous slogans and heartfelt devotion from thousands of attendees. This time, the turnout surpassed previous records, with a veritable flood of pilgrims converging on the island, drawing from Karnataka, Goa, and Maharashtra.
Many devotees carried bunches of bananas as traditional offerings — a cherished vow to the Lord, particularly revered by the local fishing community, who pray for bountiful harvests and safe voyages at sea.
Arrangements were meticulously planned, with boats and launches operating from multiple points in Karwar, including Baithkol fisheries port, to transport devotees free of charge. Local fishermen, for whom Lord Narasimha is the patron deity, played a pivotal role in ferrying the crowds, while coastal security forces and police ensured smooth operations and safety.
The hilltop Narasimha temple, which opens to the public only for a few days each year during this auspicious Jatra on Pushya Purnima, drew an estimated over 3,000 visitors who landed on the island to receive the Lord's blessings. Pilgrims who scaled the hill and obtained darshan returned fulfilled, their faith reaffirmed.
Overall, the festival concluded peacefully and magnificently, with all devotees safely returning home — a testament to the enduring spiritual legacy of this secluded island sanctuary in the Arabian Sea.
