Karwar, July 14: A tragic incident of alleged farmer suicide has been reported from Hunagund village in Mundgod taluk of Uttara Kannada district, where a 42-year-old farmer reportedly consumed poison in his agricultural field.
The deceased has been identified as Fakkiragouda Patil (42). According to preliminary information, he had borrowed more than ₹12 lakh from local banks and private finance institutions. Mounting debt and concerns over poor agricultural prospects due to drought-like conditions are believed to have pushed him into severe financial distress.
Family members said Fakkiragouda had gone to his field on Monday night but did not return home. His body was discovered in the field on Tuesday morning. Initial findings suggest he died after consuming poison.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the local farming community and has once again brought attention to the financial hardships faced by farmers in the region. Police from the Mundgod Police Station have registered a case and initiated an investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the death.
