Karwar: A minor altercation escalated into a brutal knife attack late Saturday night at Sarvodaya Nagar within the limits of the Karwar City Police Station, sending shockwaves through the locality. The violent incident occurred following a dinner organised on the occasion of the Narasimha Devar Jatra. A complaint and counter complaint has been filed by both the parties in Karwar police station.
According to police sources, the incident took place at the residence of a local person Sarvodaya Nagar, where a dinner had been hosted for friends as part of the religious celebrations. Among those present was Suryakanth Kalas, a rowdy-sheeter from the Karwar Police Station limits, who had arrived along with his associates.
The complaint filed in this regard suggest that an argument broke out among the youths present, initially over a trivial issue. The verbal exchange soon intensified, reportedly reviving discussions around past enmity. Under the influence of alcohol, tempers flared further, culminating in a violent confrontation.
In the ensuing chaos, Suryakanth Kalas allegedly attacked several individuals with a knife, leaving three persons seriously injured. Fortunately, all the injured narrowly escaped with their lives and are currently undergoing treatment.
Following the incident, the Karwar City Police registered cases and launched an immediate investigation. Six accused persons belonging to both the gangs have been arrested so far, while the prime accused, Suryakanth Kalas, remains absconding. Police teams have intensified efforts to trace and apprehend him.
A case has been registered against Suyakanth Kalas of Kalasawada, Rajath Achari Maria Nagar, , and Hruday Maryade of KHB colony, while a counter-complaint has also been filed by Hruday Mediri against Aman Banavalikar, Saneed Banavalikar and Gurupasad Surangekar, all residents of the Sarvodaya Nagar area.
Police officials revealed that Surikanth Kalas has a criminal history and was previously involved in assault-related cases. The present case has been registered under sections 115(2), 118(1) 109, 351(2) 3(5) of BNS, and further investigation is underway.
Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with the police as efforts continue to bring the absconding accused to justice.
