KUMTA: In a heart-stopping moment, two brothers riding a bike collided head-on with a speeding car, leaving them critically injured and sparking outrage over delayed emergency response. The accident unfolded on National Highway 66 near Bargi, just outside Kumta, turning a routine evening ride into a nightmare for locals.

The victims, Guru and Vitthal Harikant, both residents of Betkuli village, were zipping along from Kimani toward Kumta when tragedy struck. As they crossed the highway, a car with Telangana registration plates – barreling from Kumta toward Ankola – plowed right into their bike. Eyewitnesses described the impact as brutal, with the bike riders thrown onto the road in a heap. Both brothers suffered severe injuries and were rushed to Kumta Government Hospital, where doctors are fighting to stabilize them.
The wreckage told its own grim story: the bike and car were totaled, mangled metal scattered across the asphalt like a warning sign for how fragile life on these roads can be. Gokarna police were quick to the scene, cordoning off the area and launching an investigation into what caused the crash – though high speeds and poor visibility at dusk are already being whispered about by those who saw it unfold.
But if the collision was shocking, what happened next was downright infuriating. For over half an hour, the injured brothers lay bleeding on the highway, their cries echoing unanswered. Calls poured in for the highway ambulance service or even a government one, but nothing came. Frustrated onlookers – everyday folks just trying to help – vented their fury at the glaring gap in emergency care. "These are our roads, our people – where's the lifeline when you need it?" one local muttered, capturing the raw anger bubbling up.
In the end, with no official help in sight, they had to scramble for a private ambulance to whisk the brothers away. It's a stark reminder of how, in moments like these, seconds can mean survival. Lives that could've been saved in a flash are now hanging by a thread, all because the system let them down. Folks on the ground are calling on the government to wake up: beef up ambulance networks, train more responders, and make sure no one else has to beg for a ride to safety on NH66 or anywhere else.
