Ankola, Uttara Kannada: The Kshatriya Komarpanth community in Ankola taluk, Uttara Kannada district, celebrated Deepavali with their centuries-old, unique tradition of “Hondeyata,” a thrilling game that drew thousands of spectators this year.
Youth from Honnekere, Kumbarakeri, and Lakshmishwar villages divided into two teams to participate in this exciting game, where players use dried hindalakayi to strike opponents below the knee, following traditional rules. The event, held with great enthusiasm, captivated the large crowd gathered to witness the spirited competition.

Hondeyata has a rich mythological and historical significance. According to legend, the Kshatriya Komarpanth community, skilled in ancient martial arts, used betel nuts to train for battle, showcasing their courage and valor. This tradition continues to thrive, with the game organized annually on Balipadyami, the first day of Deepavali, as a vibrant celebration of heritage.
The event highlighted the unity, cultural pride, and festive spirit of rural communities during Deepavali. Hondeyata remains a major attraction of the festival in Ankola, reinforcing the region’s deep-rooted traditions and communal harmony.
