Gokarna, Uttara Kannada: In a creative and eye-catching initiative, the Gokarna Police have blended coastal Karnataka’s rich cultural tradition of Yakshagana with road safety awareness, promoting the mandatory use of helmets in a fun and impactful way.
Dressed in full traditional Yakshagana attire – complete with elaborate headgear, colourful costumes, and makeup – police personnel took to the streets and stopped two-wheeler riders. Instead of routine checking or fines, they delivered the road safety message through entertaining dialogues, humour, and dramatic expressions typical of Yakshagana performances.

Speaking in character, the “performers” politely counselled riders, especially youth riding without helmets, emphasising that “Life is priceless… following traffic rules is mandatory!” The light-hearted yet meaningful interaction drove home the importance of wearing helmets and adhering to traffic regulations to save lives.
The unique campaign received widespread appreciation from locals, tourists, and riders alike. Many stopped to take photographs and videos, and the message spread rapidly on social media.
By combining art, tradition, and public awareness, the Gokarna Police have set a refreshing example of community-friendly policing that resonates with people while reinforcing life-saving road safety habits.
