DANDELI (Karnataka: – It was supposed to be just another quiet morning in Dandeli, but things took a wild turn when a crocodile decided to make an unexpected guest appearance near the city's pump house, sending residents scrambling in panic on Saturday.
The sighting happened early today in the Third Number Gate area, right by the pump house where folks live and work day in and day out. Eyewitnesses say the croc slithered out into the open, casually cruising through the neighborhood like it owned the place. "We spotted it near the residential spots, and everyone just froze for a second before bolting," one local told us, still a bit shaken. "It's not every day you see something like that up close – hearts were racing, that's for sure."

Quick-thinking neighbors didn't waste time. They immediately dialed up the forest department, alerting officials to come handle the uninvited visitor. By the time help arrived, the croc had thankfully wandered back toward the water, but not before leaving a trail of jitters in its wake.
This isn't entirely out of left field for the area, locals point out. With the Kali River and plenty of other water sources nearby, crocs venturing out isn't unheard of – especially during dry spells when they're on the hunt for easier access to food or shade. "We've got nature right on our doorstep here, which is great most days, but moments like this remind us to stay sharp," said another resident who's been in Dandeli for years.
In the aftermath, authorities are urging everyone – from families in the surrounding homes to workers at the pump house – to keep their eyes peeled and play it safe. If you spot a croc or anything suspicious, don't try to be a hero; just give the forest department a ring right away. Better safe than sorry in croc country, right?
For now, the neighborhood's settling back into its routine, but with a little extra caution thrown in. Dandeli's wild side keeps things interesting, but here's hoping the next surprise is something a bit less toothy.
