Gokarna: A major tragedy was narrowly averted on the main beach of Gokarna when four 10th-standard students and one teacher from Melagatta Government High School in Shivamogga district were caught in a strong rip current.
Despite clear warnings from on-duty lifeguards not to enter deep water, a group of 39 students and teachers who had come on an educational tour ventured into the sea. Within minutes, strong waves pulled five of them into deeper water. The students — Niyaz Ahmed (15), Mohammed Zilal (15), Akash (15), and one unidentified 10th-class student — along with their teacher began drowning.
Lifeguards Mohan Ambiga and Roshan Kharvi, who were stationed at the beach, immediately jumped into action and successfully rescued all five individuals. They were quickly assisted by members of Gokarna Water Sports team — Darshan Harikanth, Chidanand Lakkumane, Deepak Gowda, Ashok Harikanth, Mahesh Harikanth, Jaggu Harikanth, and Kamalakar Hoskatt — whose coordinated efforts ensured everyone was brought safely to shore.
All rescued individuals were reported to be out of danger. Gokarna police reached the spot, recorded statements, and have initiated further inquiry.
Authorities once again urged tourists and school groups to strictly follow lifeguard instructions and avoid entering the sea in areas marked as dangerous, especially during high tide and strong currents.
This incident highlights the critical importance of professional lifeguards and beach safety awareness at popular tourist destinations like Gokarna.
