Karwar July 11: Veteran playback singer S. Janaki, fondly known as the "Nightingale of South India," passed away at the age of 88 while undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospital in Mysuru on Saturday. She had been battling age-related health complications.
S. Janaki was one of India's most celebrated playback singers, with an illustrious career spanning over six decades. She recorded nearly songs in more than 20 languages, including Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Hindi, earning immense admiration for her extraordinary versatility and soulful voice.
A recipient of four National Film Awards and numerous State Film Awards, Janaki left an indelible mark on Indian cinema through countless timeless melodies. Her passing marks the end of an era in Indian playback music, and tributes have begun pouring in from the film fraternity, musicians, political leaders, and fans across the country.
