Karwar: Residents in the city’s Kathinakona neighbourhood got quite a scare on Sunday when six big pythons suddenly turned up in the compound of a house.

The snakes were spotted slithering among piles of iron rods and other materials that homeowner Vijay Talekar had stored for building a concrete arch. Panic quickly spread, and worried locals immediately called Gopal Nayak, the forest department’s patrolling guard who handles snake rescues.
Nayak arrived and safely caught all six reptiles, which measured anywhere from eight to 12 feet long. He then released them back into the forest.
Speaking after the rescue, Nayak explained that there was no real mystery behind the unusual gathering. “We’re just at the beginning of summer, which is the snakes’ mating season,” he said. “Males naturally come looking for females, so it’s quite common for them to show up in the same spot like this.”
The incident has left locals a little more cautious, but thankfully no one was hurt and the pythons are now safely back in the wild.
