Honnavar: A devastating accident in Kasarkod’s Batte Vinayaka keri area of Honnavar taluk claimed the lives of a couple on Sunday, casting a pall over Diwali celebrations.
The victims, identified as Santosh Gowda and his wife Sheetu Gowda, were electrocuted when a live power line reportedly snapped and fell near their home, leading to their immediate deaths, according to preliminary reports.
The couple’s bodies were shifted to Honnavar Government Hospital for post-mortem examination. However, local residents and relatives have accused the Hubli Electricity Supply Company (HESCOM) of negligence, alleging that poor maintenance of power lines caused the tragedy. Outraged, they have refused to claim the bodies until justice is served, staging a protest outside the hospital.

The incident, occurring on the festival of lights, has left the community in mourning. The couple is survived by their two sons. Tensions remain high at the hospital, with police deploying tight security to maintain order.
