Karwar: Uttara Kannada district witnessed a series of contrasting wildlife-related incidents over the past two days—ranging from a tense roadside sighting of a tigress with her cub, to a carefully executed snake rescue in a residential area, and the unsettling discovery of a dead leopard along a forest road. Together, these incidents underline the growing proximity between humans and wildlife in the Western Ghats region and the need for heightened caution.

Leopard Found Dead Along Supa–Bamanagi Road in Joida
Meanwhile, concern deepened on Monday evening after a leopard was found dead along the roadside on the Supa–Bamanagi road in Joida taluk. The carcass was spotted close to the road, triggering anxiety among locals. Forest department officials rushed to the scene soon after receiving information and began an inspection. Preliminary reports suggest that the exact cause of death is yet to be determined.
Officials pointed out that the area lies close to dense forest, where wildlife movement is frequent. In light of the incident, the forest department has once again urged motorists to drive cautiously, particularly during evening and night hours, to prevent accidents involving wild animals.
Tigress and Cub Spotted Near Sirsi–Sonda Road
Panic briefly gripped commuters on Sunday evening after a tigress and her cub were spotted near Surimane Cross on the Devarahole–Devadakeri main road in Sirsi taluk. The sighting occurred around 7.30 pm, when the big cat and its young one emerged close to the roadside as an Omni vehicle was travelling from Sirsi towards Sonda. The dramatic moment was captured on a mobile phone by Sonda residents Ratnakar Hegde and Shridhar Hegde. The photos and videos soon spread across social media, drawing widespread attention and concern.
Local residents said the sighting has heightened fear, especially among two-wheeler riders and motorists who frequently travel on this stretch after dusk. They have urged commuters to remain alert, avoid unnecessary night travel, and reduce speed while passing through forest-adjacent roads, as the area is known for regular wildlife movement.
Cobra Safely Rescued from Ankola Residence
In a contrasting incident that ended on a reassuring note, a venomous cobra was safely rescued from a house in Gabitawad village of Harwad, Ankola taluk. Family members at the residence of Saq Sabh noticed the cobra inside their home and promptly alerted snake rescuer Prashant Kalas. Responding swiftly, Kalas reached the spot and carried out a calm and coordinated rescue operation.
With careful handling, the cobra was brought under control without causing harm to either the snake or the residents. The rescued reptile was later released safely into a nearby forest area, restoring it to its natural habitat. Locals praised Prashant Kalas for his presence of mind and expertise. Notably, this rescue marks his 50th successful cobra rescue, a milestone that has earned him admiration and respect across the region.

These three incidents, occurring within a short span across different parts of Uttara Kannada, highlight the increasing overlap between human activity and wildlife habitats. While timely intervention and awareness helped avert harm in Ankola, the sightings near Sirsi and the leopard’s death in Joida serve as stark reminders of the fragile balance between development and conservation in forest-rich regions.
