Karwar: The Indian Navy has strengthened its maritime defence capabilities with the commissioning of INS Malwan, an advanced Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC), at the prestigious INS Kadamba Naval Base in Karwar, Karnataka.
Built by Cochin Shipyard Limited under India's indigenous shipbuilding programme, INS Malwan is designed to detect, track and neutralize enemy submarines operating in coastal and deep-sea environments. The warship measures approximately 80 metres in length and has a displacement of around 1,100 tonnes, making it a formidable addition to the Navy's fleet.
Equipped with advanced anti-submarine rockets, sophisticated sonar systems and modern radar technology, the vessel is capable of carrying out critical underwater surveillance and anti-submarine operations. The induction of INS Malwan is expected to significantly enhance India's coastal defence and maritime security preparedness.
The warship derives its name from Malvan, the historic coastal town in Maharashtra known for the iconic Sindhudurg Fort, built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to protect India's western coastline and regulate maritime trade. Reflecting this legacy, the ship's crest features the Bagh Nakh (Tiger Claw), the legendary weapon associated with Shivaji Maharaj.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by several senior defence and naval officials, including Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh, Chief of the Air Staff and Chief Guest for the event, Rear Admiral FOK Vikram Menon, Commander Praveen Kumar Tiwari, Commanding Officer of INS Malwan, and Josh Vije, Chairman and Managing Director of Cochin Shipyard Limited.
The commissioning of INS Malwan marks another milestone in India's journey towards defence self-reliance under the indigenous shipbuilding initiative and reinforces the Indian Navy's ability to safeguard the nation's maritime interests in the Indian Ocean Region.
