Karwar: The agitation against the proposed private Greenfield Port project at Keni in Ankola taluk has intensified, with the Ankola Uttara Kannada Ulisi Sarva Samajagala Hitarakshana Vedike announcing a massive padayatra from Ankola to the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Karwar on July 22.
Addressing a press conference in Karwar, forum leader Sanjeev Balegar said the march is being organized to urge the government to withdraw the proposed port project. He stated that applications seeking permission for the padayatra have already been submitted to the concerned authorities.
Balegar warned that if permission for the march is denied, protesters will launch an indefinite hunger strike in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office. He added that the anti-port movement has been ongoing for nearly 600 days and has received support from fishermen, farmers, students, labour organizations and various community groups.
The organizers emphasized that the padayatra will be conducted peacefully and in accordance with the law, ensuring that there is no disruption to public order or inconvenience to the public.
Activists including Keshav Naik, Krishnamurthy Naik, Hanuma H. Gowda, Ravi Gowda, Chandrakant Harikantra, Venkatesh Durgekar, Nilesh Gnaneshwar Harikantra, Raghavendra and Girish Balegar were present at the press conference.
